Our history

The Great Midwest Seafood Company got its start in 1983 when Jeff and Janet Melchert launched their vision of supplying superb seafood to their home community. Just a few short years later, business grew and changed from mostly retail to increasing commercial accounts.

Dave Serrurier joined in ownership to help strengthen the business in 1986. Having worked together previously, both Jeff and Dave knew they’d make a great partnership. Jennie Serrurier, Dave’s wife, also expanded the team in 1994. Janet and Jennie worked together over several years to make the retail storefront what it is today. Due to an ever-increasing shellfish allergy, Jennie made the difficult decision to retire at the end of 2025.

Jeff and Janet’s son, David Melchert, started as a salesman in 2000 after graduating from Wartburg College. He spent many years learning the seafood business and deepening his knowledge. In 2013, as Janet and Jeff transitioned into retirement, David Melchert and Dave Serrurier became business partners. David’s wife, Sandra, entered the world of seafood in 2015, leaving her 15-year teaching career. You can find Sandra waiting on retail customers or in the office keeping the guys in line.
